Maseru-Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili says the government would continue to look into strategies to establish new industries for the economic growth of the country.
Mosisili was speaking at an occasion to officially open Lesotho's first cement manufacturing facility on Thursday.Afrisam will run the cement facility.
The PM said the facility is one of the milestones and an opportunity in that it would create jobs and play could play powerful role in the economic and social development.
The facility is expected to create 1000 direct and indirect jobs in a number of sectors within the plant.
The opening of the cement plant will greatly benefit the second phase of the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, the premier said.
Mosisili congratulated Afrisam for putting up the plant in the country for "its contribution to the skills promotion in the local labour".
Mosisili also said Lesotho is committed to remain strong partners with the cement company by providing the necessary support for it to operate in the country.
Speaking at the same event, the Afrisam Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stephan Olivier said he believed the facility would be a significant investment in the future of Lesotho.
The plant comprises a blending and packing facility and has an initial cement production capacity of 200 000 tons per annum.
