Farmers see red as storm erodes fields

Mokhotlong - 25 agricultural fields in the Plaatberg area in Mokhotlong have suffered great loss of soil following the recent rains storms which hit the district leaving farmers hopeless.

Mankemiseng Mokholojane, the Community councilor of Plaatberg said although rain is good to support essential growth of their crops, the frequency at which they experience rain storms has left them wondering where to grow their crops because in most cases top soil from their fields always get eroded to the rivers and thus living behind rocky surfaces.

She further said quite a number of fields are left with deep visible furrows as a result that means a huge shock for farmers who depends much on crops production suffer from hunger.

Mokholojane said accessibility to other villages still remain a challenge after some parts of access roads suffered a huge damages resulting from heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms.

The rainstorms also disrupted water pipelines in the townships of Salang, Mangaung and Nthlohetsane leaving residents with severe drinking water shortages.
