Maseru - All Basotho Convention - ABC leader Thomas Thabane appeared before court today on charges of speaking ill of His Majesty King Letsie III.
Thabane was charged for slandering the king at a press conference he held with other opposition leaders last month.
Thabane who accompanied by hundreds of his ABC supporters, had three charges read to him in the Maseru Magistrates.
He was not asked to plead. Thabane's lawyer Advocate Haae Phoofolo speaking on his client's charges said it is unfortunate that as former prime minister, Thabane has been hulled before court and that the appearance tarnishes Thabane's and his party's image.
"Our view is that (Thabane) is persecuted," Phoofolo said lamenting that this happens during an election period.
Thabane will again appear before court on May 3.
