Ngatana makes it to India after funding headache

MASERU - Thabelo Ngatana, 18, from Upper Thamae left for New Delhi in India to represent Lesotho at the Face of Beauty International 2018 Thursday last week. The Face of Beauty International pageant aims to develop young female leaders from around the world to empower contestants to find beauty and reflect it in their lives. Miss Face of Lesotho was hosted in Leribe on April 1 as a platform to find a beauty queen to represent Lesotho in India and Ngatana scooped the much-coveted crown.

With a total of 50 contestants from 50 countries Ngatana knows the competition is tough but remains upbeat. The contest started on September 7 and is scheduled to run until September 17. Ngatana’s plan to win the contest is by simply being herself because she says “nothing beats not having to be someone’s copycat”.

The beauty has been involved in several beauty contests such as Miss Upper Thamae and Miss Junior Teen Kingdom Nations in 2014, which she won. One of the things Ngatana targets to advocate should she come home victorious is for the government of Lesotho to support beauty pageants and modelling just as it does for other extra-mural activities and sports such as soccer.

This, Ngatana would do after she herself faced hurdles to secure funds to reach India ahead of this year’s contest. “It is sad that one would miss an opportunity of a lifetime to represent his or her country internationally due to unavailability of funds. “When one is out of the country for matters like this, the person is no longer his or her individual self but is her own country,” Ngatana said.

Socialist Revolutionary Party leader Teboho Mojapela sponsored most of Ngatana’s needs including the flight ticket, visa and transport to and from OR Tambo international airport. Ngatana indicated she was very grateful for the help Mojapela offered. “I would also be very mistaken and ungrateful if I do not also thank other people who stretched their arms to make my going to India a success. Emmanuel Hostel helped me with 50 gifts. We have to exchange gifts on arrivals. The Ministry of Tourism helped me with the ‘I am me video’, Mr Mokherane Tsatsanyane of Stadium Area and the Mothae Diamonds General Manager helped financially.”

Other sponsors included DR Guest house, Thamae LEC, Leseli Fianancs with Mabeile Malataliana as the dress designer, Ngatana said. Speaking to Public Eye, SR Secretary General ’Mapali Molula said her leader, Teboho Mojapela has always been very fond and protective of the talents of Basotho youth hence it was easy for him to help Ngatana. She said her leader always says it would be a pity if those talents are not nurtured because it is through them that the youth would put food on the table, especially given the high unemployment facing Lesotho.
