Soldier seeks bail in LRA worker’s killing

MASERU – A member of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) who is accused of fatally injuring an employee of the Lesotho Revenue Authority (LRA) at the last summer jazz festival has approached the High Court for bail. Private Motsienyane Phamong is expected to make another appearance before the Maseru Magistrate’s Court on January 21.

Phamong, 30, who has been remanded in custody briefly appeared before Magistrate Monyake Hlabanyane on Wednesday. It is alleged that a stray bullet fired from Phamong’s gun on December 21 last year at the ’Manthabiseng Convention Centre accidentally hit Limpho Mohlapiso.

It is further alleged that Phamong had gotten into an altercation with a third man and fired some shots during the melee that ensued. Mohlapiso, Phamong and the third man were part of revelers who had attended the music festival. Mohlapiso who was gravely injured during the shootout was admitted in hospital but later died on January 5.
