Mob burns suspected thief in Berea


BEREA – A mob irked by rampant theft in Berea District, this week burnt alive a suspected thief in Ha Ramoholi .The suspect in his 20’s, whose names are known to Public Eye, reportedly broke into a house and stole an undisclosed amount of money.

His dog was spotted at the scene of the crime and was then used to lead the villagers to his hideout. “He could not outrun the mob. He begged for mercy but villagers paid deaf ears to his pleas and beat him to pulp. He was identified as one of notorious criminals in the area alleged to have participated in theft, house breaking, rape and murder,” said a villager who asked not to be named.

Area Chief Lebona Khereng, confirmed the incident, adding the suspect’s family had been notified of his brutal killing. On Tuesday morning Police Spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli told this publication he was not aware of the case.

He however criticised villagers who took the law into their own hands, echoing Assistance Commissioner of Police Motlatsi Mapola’s sentiments. “When people take the law into their hands they commit a crime and thus, inviting in the police to investigate a case in another case. All crime suspects have to be prosecuted accordingly,” he had told a public gathering in Maputsoe recently.
