A lifeline for the youth: Hello Mocha offers free, confidential health support

MASERU – In a major step to address the unique health challenges faced by young people, the Ministry of Health launched the Hello Mocha Toll-Free line last Friday.
This pioneering initiative, supported by the Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric Aids Foundation (EGPAF), provides confidential and free health services to Basotho youth nationwide between the ages of 10 and 24.
The service is designed to “meet young people halfway,” offering a safe and private alternative to physical clinics for those seeking guidance on sensitive health issues.
Speaking at the launch in Maseru, health minister, Selibe Mochoboroane, underscored the government’s duty to ensure its youth are not left behind.
“Young people face multiple life challenges, including social pressures and health risks that require timely intervention,” he stated. “It is our responsibility to provide platforms where they can freely and confidently access the services they need.”
Minister Mochoboroane was quick to reassure that the service is not limited to the capital. “Although we launch here in Maseru, this toll-free call centre will serve young people from every district across the country,” he affirmed.
Dr Llang Maama, Director of Primary Health Care Services, elaborated that the helpline’s scope extends beyond physical health to include critical mental health support. He described Hello Mocha as a vital lifeline for youth who may feel reluctant or unable to visit a health facility.
“This call centre will assist youth in accessing services such as mental health support,” Dr Maama said. “We appeal to them to make use of this toll-free line for their own benefit. It is our collective effort to support them as they navigate life’s issues.”
The initiative was warmly welcomed by youth representative, Neo Nkohli, who highlighted how stigma, fear, and lack of privacy often deter young people from seeking help.
“I believe this call center will make our lives easier because of the guidance and support we will be given,” Nkohli said.

The Hello Mocha Toll-Free line is operational from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The ministry announced plans to eventually extend operations to weekends, with a long-term vision of a 24/7 service.
By breaking down barriers of distance, cost, and fear, the Hello Mocha initiative marks a crucial investment in building a healthier, more informed, and resilient generation for Lesotho’s future.
