Govt formally gazettes new IEC leadership

MASERU – Government has officially announced the gazettement of the recently appointed chairperson and commissioners of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The appointments, made by King Letsie III on the advice of the Council of State, were published in the Government Gazette under Legal Notice No 4 of 2026, taking effect from January 23.

The newly gazetted IEC members bring a diverse range of expertise to the electoral body. Reverend Dr John Maphephe assumes the role of chairperson, bringing extensive international experience as a consultant in elections, technology governance and democratic development.

He is joined by Commissioner Pontšo ‘Mamatlere Matete, a veteran of the IEC with over 29 years of service, including key roles in managing Lesotho’s electoral operations and the landmark 2015 snap elections. The third member, Commissioner, Dr Chelete Monyane, is an acclaimed academic and governance expert with deep research experience in electoral reforms and policy development within Southern Africa.

The appointments are made pursuant to Section 66(1) of the Constitution of Lesotho. The gazettement finalizes the legal process, formally installing the trio to lead the commission. Their combined backgrounds in electoral management, conflict resolution, legal frameworks, and technological innovation are expected to guide the IEC in strengthening electoral integrity and public trust ahead of future national polls.
