From Volvo – XC40 Recharge Pure Electric

TUMELO MAKETEKETE

The second half of 2021 will see this Swedish luxury brand launch its first fully electric car. The all electric sport utility vehicle is already doing well in sales internationally.

The XC40 Recharge will be able to cover over 400 km, and from its twin electric motors are able to push out 304 kW of power and a decent torque of 660 Nm. You can expect a performance of 4.9 seconds from 0 – 100 km/h.

The XC40 Recharge is the first of vehicles to be launched by the company over the next five years. Addressing the issues on charging, Greg Maruszewski Managing Director at Volvo South Africa, said these will be charged at home, at the dealership or over a network of ever-growing public charging stations.

I am not sure how this is going to be practical considering that our power utility, Eskom, is already under severe strain and not to mention its unreliability. In that backdrop, fully electric cars may remain a farfetched reality for many motoring enthusiasts.

By 2025 Volvo cars expects its global sales to be 50 percent all electric, as it aims to reduce its CO2 footprint by 40 percent.

KIA South Africa

While on the topic of fully electric cars, Kia South Africa is also to follow the trend. They (Kia SA) teased the market with their EV6, their first dedicated EV platform. The EV6 is their first of next- generation BEV’s to be developed under a new design philosophy as the brand moves towards electric cars. This new approach is said to bring simplicity and consistency to Kia’s EV nomenclature across all global markets.

Kia has not furnished any other information relating to this particular product, except the official leaked pictures, but the secret will not be hidden indefinitely.
