Maseru – A 19-year-old girl from Ha Liile, Roma appeared before the Maseru magistrate court on 13th February accused of hiding a child birth.
Joalane Kumi gave birth on 7 February and asked her 17-year-old friend to accompany her to Liphiring River, where they both dug a small grave to bury the baby.
The new born’s corpse was discovered by fellow villagers who remembered seeing the two girls carrying spades and moving towards the river. The villagers immediately reported the matter to the police.
She was sentenced to three years in jail or ordered to pay a bail of M3 000, which she failed to pay.
