MASERU – In a heart-wrenching start to their CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifiers campaign, Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Ladies suffered a devastating 2-1 defeat to hosts Gaborone United at the Botswana Football Association National Stadium on Thursday, surrendering a first-half lead through an 88th-minute winner that shattered their hopes of an opening-day point.
The result leaves the Lesotho champions with a mountain to climb in Group A of the regional qualifiers, which serve as the gateway to the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League finals scheduled later this year.
The COSAFA Qualifiers bring together champions from across Southern Africa, with only the tournament winner earning the right to represent the region on the continent’s biggest club stage.
LDF, making their second appearance in the regional competition, arrived in Gaborone with genuine aspirations of advancing beyond the group stage after gaining valuable experience in previous editions. However, their campaign now hangs in the balance following this agonizing late setback.
The Lesotho military side could not have wished for a better beginning to their Group A campaign. Head coach, Nation Dube, had clearly drilled her team meticulously in defensive organization, and the players executed the game plan to perfection during the opening 45 minutes.
LDF adopted a compact, disciplined defensive shape, dropping deep into their own half and denying Gaborone United any space to operate between the lines. The hosts, cheered on by their passionate home support, grew increasingly frustrated as wave after wave of attacks were repelled by the visitors’ well-organized rear-guard.
Despite their defensive priorities, LDF remained a threat on the counter-attack. Their willingness to commit numbers forward when opportunities arose caught the hosts off guard on several occasions. The breakthrough arrived in the 15th minute when Reitumetse Namane produced a moment of individual brilliance, firing a clinical finish past the Gaborone United goalkeeper to send the traveling contingent into raptures.
The goal injected belief into the LDF ranks, and they continued to frustrate their opponents with determined defending. The LDF goalkeeper was called into action multiple times as United searched desperately for an equalizer, producing vital saves that preserved the visitors’ advantage heading into the interval.
Gaborone United emerged from the halftime break with renewed purpose and a more patient approach to breaking down the stubborn LDF defence. Rather than forcing attacks, the Botswana champions focused on controlled build-up play, moving the ball from side to side to stretch the visitors’ defensive block.
The tactical adjustment paid dividends in the 54th minute when Lesego Radiakanyo found the back of the net, restoring parity and shifting the momentum decisively in favour of the hosts. The equalizer seemed to drain energy from LDF, who had expended considerable effort in their first-half defensive display.
United continued to probe relentlessly, while LDF found themselves increasingly pinned back in their own territory. The Lesotho side did show flashes of attacking intent, but the composure and control they had exhibited earlier in the match had evaporated under sustained pressure.
With regulation time winding down and a valuable point appearing within reach, LDF’s hopes were cruelly dashed. In the 88th minute, Goitsemang Tlamma struck the decisive blow, completing the hosts’ comeback and sending the home crowd into celebration while leaving the Lesotho players devastated.
The late concession represents a bitter pill for LDF, who had defended resolutely for the vast majority of the match and had looked capable of securing at least a draw after taking an early advantage. The result highlights the unforgiving nature of continental competition, where moments of concentration lapse can prove decisive.
Earlier in the day, Zambia’s ZESCO Ndola Girls sent a warning to the rest of the group with an emphatic 5-2 demolition of Zimbabwe’s Herentals Queens. The Zambian champions displayed formidable attacking firepower that will undoubtedly concern their remaining opponents.
The COSAFA Qualifiers represent the only pathway for Southern African clubs to reach the CAF Women’s Champions League finals, which have grown significantly in prestige since the tournament’s inception in 2021. Previous editions have showcased the region’s best talent and provided invaluable experience for players aspiring to compete at the highest level.
LDF now face an uphill battle to revive their qualification hopes. Their second Group A fixture against ZESCO Ndola Girls on Saturday presents a daunting challenge against a side brimming with confidence following their goal-scoring exploits.
The Lesotho champions will then conclude their group-stage campaign against Herentals Queens on Monday, a match that could prove decisive in determining their fate. With both remaining opponents having demonstrated their attacking capabilities, Dube’s side must find ways to tighten their defensive organization while rediscovering the attacking threat they showed in glimpses against Gaborone United.
Improvement is imperative if LDF are to keep their aspirations of progressing to the knockout stages alive. The experience gained from this heart-breaking defeat must be channelled into positive performances in their remaining fixtures.
