MASERU – Leading cellular phone communications provider Vodacom Lesotho (VCL) has warned its clients about a fraudulent practice on its Mpesa platform.

VCL announced yesterday that criminals are sending fake short messages to Vodacom users claiming money has been sent to their Mpesa accounts by mistake and asking account holders to send it back.

Unsuspecting is where the account holder will send the money back only to find that the account holder would have in fact lost their money to the fraudster.

An SMS sent out to clients yesterday, read: “There are fraudsters calling/sending fake SMSs tricking customers into sending money back to them under the pretext that funds have been transferred erroneously.”
