MASERU – The Sam Matekane Foundation (SMF) on Wednesday this week donated M8 million worth of uniform to the local police at the Police Headquarters in Maseru. At the event the police received boots and two-piece police uniforms from SMF which will be distributed to 1 000 police officers. On behalf of the recipients Commissioner of Police Holomo Molibeli said they were grateful for the prestigious gifts with high quality fabric like those of other countries.

“Indeed we are running short of uniforms, and Sam Matekane Foundation never disappoints as not long ago it bought us vehicles for Thetsane, Marakabei and Mantšonyane police stations, and also maintained Thetsane Police Station.” Businessman Sam Matekane said SMF is proud to contribute to the improvement of policing by providing new uniform and wishes to show that police are respectable accessible.

He said he is impressed to see their good performance on traffic control as a way to help people get to their different jobs and places on time. However, he expressed concern about the divisions within the police force adding some police officers are now increasingly being influenced by politics which has tarnished the image of their profession that they took the oath in.

“I humbly appeal to you to reconsider your ways and go back to where a police officer was a real helper and a true friend, and also stick to what you vowed to do when you came into this profession, which is to protect the nation,” said Matekane.

Matekane stated that it took them time to finally put into action the idea which they planned last year of handing over uniform to the police officers, adding that the uniform is a contribution to enable police officers to do their work of enforcing the law to the nation with dignity.

He also urged the police officers to go back and introspect because they seem to be engaging more into politics day by day. The Sam Matekane Foundation is a non-profit organisation, which invests in people by empowering them to realise their great ideas through innovative, inspirational and inclusive problem solving in agriculture, health, youth and entrepreneurship and education.
