Excitement builds for Lesotho’s premier horse racing event

MASERU – The countdown has begun for one of Lesotho’s most anticipated annual events, the Royal Cup. Set to take place on October 12 in Mohale’s Hoek, this prestigious horse racing spectacle, held in honour of King Letsie III’s birthday, promises to be even more thrilling in its second edition.
On July 17, His Majesty King Letsie III marked his 61st birthday, and with over 50 elite-class horses gearing up for fierce competition, the Royal Cup is set to be a spectacular event befitting the celebration of his reign.
According to the race organiser, Motlatsi Russell from Bienvenue, this year’s event will be different, as it will feature only flat race horses competing across five categories: Lesotho Breed, Maiden-Plate, Bottom Division, Top Division, and Farewell.
“We are expecting 50 horses to competing in this year’s Royal Cup,” said Russell during a press briefing in Maseru on Tuesday. “This year, only flat race horses will participate, a decision made to align with international horseracing standards.”
Reflecting on the changes, Russell explained that last year’s inclusion of both flat-race and triple horses was an oversight. “It is like fielding both men and women footballers in the same game. It simply does not meet the standards of professional horseracing,” he said.
“Through research and learning from other countries, we have realised that these categories should be held on separate days. If you have ever watched the Durban July in South Africa, you would know that these races are never run simultaneously,” Russell also said.
The shift in focus is aimed at elevating Lesotho’s horseracing scene to meet international standards. Russell further revealed that the official programme and prize details would be released on September 12, a month before the big day.
As Mohale’s Hoek prepares to once again host the Royal Cup, the district is buzzing with anticipation. “Mohale’s Hoek has long been a hub for horseracing, and we have seen how these competitions boost tourism and business in the district,” said Russell.
“Local entrepreneurs, especially in hospitality and other sectors, are set to benefit significantly from this event.” The Royal Cup’s continued success is supported by Econet Telecom Lesotho, which is sponsoring the event to the tune of M500,000.
From this sponsorship, M100, 000 will be allocated as prize money for the winning horses. Econet’s representative, Puleng ’Mathabo Masoabi, noted that last year the company had to increase its contribution to M650,000 to cover additional expenses, including a fashion design competition.
“This year, we are anticipating another significant investment, especially with the introduction of a horse betting competition that will allow the public to predict the winners,” said Masoabi.
As the excitement builds, the Royal Cup promises to be more than just a race – it is a celebration of culture, tradition, and the thriving spirit of Lesotho.
