MASERU – The Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) are buzzing with excitement over the return of their star forward, Katleho Makateng, who is back after completing a two-year stint with South African Premiership side, Richards Bay FC. Makateng, now 25, has officially re-joined LDF FC following the expiration of his contract with Richards Bay at the end of the 2023/24 season.

His return has reignited hope among LDF supporters, as they believe his striking prowess will be crucial in the club’s upcoming campaign.LDF FC spokesperson, Tšepo Keketsi, expressed the team’s delight during an interview earlier this week, highlighting the impact of Makateng’s return.

“We are thrilled to have him back in our ranks,” said Keketsi. “Yes, there were offers from other South African clubs, but they were smaller teams. We felt it would be wiser for him to return home and re-join LDF FC.”Keketsi said although Makateng was not a regular at Richards Bay, he remains a valuable asset with great potential. “Makateng is still young and has plenty of time to bounce back. His return will give him the confidence boost he needs to get back to his best form,” he added.

Despite limited game time in South Africa, Makateng’s passion and discipline remain unwavering. “He is still the same upbeat and focused player we have always known,” Keketsi said. “Having him back is a blessing in disguise. We have other strikers, but his lethal finishing ability will be pivotal for us this season.”

Makateng was a force to be reckoned with before his move to Richards Bay, dominating the Vodacom Premier League in Lesotho. During the 2021/22 season, he scored an impressive 20 goals, propelling LDF FC to new heights. In addition to his return to the pitch, Makateng has also received a promotion in his military career. Keketsi confirmed that he was elevated from the rank of private to lance corporal upon his homecoming, solidifying his role as a leader both on and off the field.

Makateng’s football journey began in Pitseng, Leribe, where he played for the second-division side Litšilo. His skill and determination eventually earned him a spot at LDF FC and later led him to Richards Bay after the team’s promotion to South Africa’s top flight in 2022.The forward, affectionately known as “Rooney,” recently represented Lesotho’s national team, Likuena, in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Central African Republic and Morocco.
