Tragedy hits Maseru City Run

MASERU – The Maseru City Run has announced a tragic accident that occurred during their February 23 race that resulted in the death of a participant. The event attracted over 1 400 athletes in five categories namely 42km, 21km, 10k, 5km, and 1.6km. A Maseru City Run statement released following the event reports that 36-year-old Tšeliso Makana, runner No 304, running the 21km race, collapsed 1.5km from the finish line in Maseru West.
He was rushed to the Maseru District Hospital where he was confirmed dead. Organisers had secured four ambulances staffed by nine paramedics providing medical assistance at the event. They responded to five incidents along the race routes.
The statement further indicates that the cause of death is currently unknown, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The Maseru City Run organisers, sponsors, the officials of Federation of Athletics Lesotho at district and head office level, participating companies, friends, running partners, and colleagues have extended their deepest sympathy and condolences to Makana’s family.
The official statement recognised the vital role of the event’s medical teams, thanking Vitality Health, the Lesotho Defence Force, and Maluti Mountain Cement for providing ambulance and support.
The highly anticipated third edition of Maseru City Run was a special occasion, attended by Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso, Crown Prince Lerotholi and Minister of Sports Motlatsi Maqelepo. Their participation in the 10km race added a significant touch and inspired both local and international runners.
The Maseru City Run is an annual race in Maseru Lesotho that includes a marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km, and 1.6 km. it was first held in February 2023 with 350 participants and no sponsors.
In 2024, the event saw growth, attracting 816 participants and securing support from four sponsors. While this year, the event attracted over 1 400 athletes and many sponsors with Nedbank Lesotho being a major sponsor by pumping M100 000 to boost this year’s run.
