MASERU – Lesotho has taken a major step toward a more connected and inclusive future with the official launch of its National Digital Transformation Strategy and the accompanying Ministerial Strategy.
The announcement this week was made by the Minister of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation, Nthati Moorosi, during a ceremony held at Victory Hall in Maseru.
The newly launched strategies will guide the country’s digital development over the next five years, with the goal of transforming Lesotho into a modern, digitally advanced nation.
By expanding access to the internet, improving public services, supporting small businesses, and creating new economic opportunities, the government hopes to make daily life easier for all Basotho.
In her address, Minister Moorosi emphasized the importance of these strategies in fostering national development and reducing inequality. She announced that new policies will soon be introduced to improve internet infrastructure, ensure data safety, and promote the responsible use of technology.
The country also plans to test digital identification cards and certificates, which are expected to simplify access to services and make it easier for citizens to do business.
The strategies include a strong focus on empowering youth, women, and local innovators, aiming to give them the digital tools and skills needed to thrive in the modern economy.
Although nearly half of Lesotho’s population still lacks reliable internet access and basic digital skills, the strategy is designed to ensure that no one is left behind.
Minister Moorosi, who also serves as Chief Digital Officer of Lesotho and Chair of the African Union ICT Committee, expressed her gratitude to all the partners who supported the development of the strategy.
These include both local and international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, the International Telecommunication Union, and the World Bank.
She concluded her remarks with a message of unity and hope, quoting the wise words of Morena Mohlomi: “The strength of a nation lies in the courage and unity of its people to shape a better tomorrow.”
