MASERU – A 27-year-old man, Likhapha Mariti, of Ha-Motseki appeared before the Maseru magistrate court on 28 December 2019 accused of raping and killing a 77-year-old woman on 27 December.

Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli, the police spokesperson said this while addressing the media on Monday, January 6, 2020.

Mariti will re-appear in court on January 7.

According to Mopeli, the suspect barged into the old woman’s house and started beating her before he raped her.

“The old woman was found dead in her house by the villagers and next to her was the suspect’s necklace which gave him away,” said Mopeli.

Nigerian uses Basotho women as drug mules

Maseru – Two women from Naleli, Lineo Lucy Matete and Lydia Mamothobi Shale were arrested on November 7, 2019 and appeared before the High Court of Ghana accused of dealing in drugs.

Mopeli said investigations show both women were hired by one Nigerian man living in South Africa who promised to give each of them M5000.00 after transporting the bags full of clothes from Ghana to Lesotho unaware that the bags were also carrying drugs.

Their first court appearance was on November 14, while the second was on November 28 and another on December 12

They are still in custody in Ghana waiting to re-appear in court.

Mum’s boyfriend repeatedly rapas minor

QACHA’S NEK – A 27-year-old man from Qacha’s Nek appeared before the magistrate court on December 30 for raping a 16-year-old girl.

He was granted a M500 bail and is expected to re-appear in court on January 27.

Police said the suspect, who had an affair with the victim’s mother, had been raping the child between 2014 and 2017 but it was only on December 28, 2019 that the victim reported the matter.

“Both the mother and the suspect sell Sesotho traditional beer which they also often drink after which they would normally sleep in one room with the victim,” Mopeli said.

“When the mother is fast asleep, the man would move to the young girl and rape her”.

In addition, when the girl is sent by her mother to fetch something from the man’s house, she would be raped first and the man would threaten to kill the girl and stop supporting her mother.
