Insurance firm assists cops to combat cybercrime

MASERUIn a bid to bolster the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) in the fight against cybercrime, Alliance Insurance Company has made a substantial donation of 14 laptops and 14 desktop computers. The donation, presented at the police headquarters, is seen as a crucial step towards modernising the police service’s digital capabilities and tackling the escalating threat of cybercrime in Lesotho.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sera Makharilele, speaking during the handover, hailed the contribution as timely and critical for the force. “Today, we celebrate not only as the LMPS but also as a nation. These tools will significantly enhance our ability to confront cybercrime, a growing menace that we must take seriously,” he said.

Makharilele noted that as cybercriminals grow more sophisticated, so too must the police’s ability to counter these threats. He expressed deep appreciation for Alliance Insurance’s continued support, adding that the collaboration between the police and private sector was essential in addressing security challenges.

“The world is witnessing a surge in cybercrime, and Lesotho is not immune. This donation is not just about technology—it is about safeguarding our citizens and protecting our digital infrastructure.”Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Alliance Insurance, Mahapinyane Taole, shared similar sentiments, saying that their company recognised the need to assist the LMPS in navigating the digital age. “As the country’s protectors, the police require advanced tools to perform their duties efficiently. Our long-standing relationship with LMPS has made it clear that this is a vital area where we can contribute,” he said. Taole added that ensuring public safety is a shared responsibility, and businesses must play their part.

The event also saw Police Commissioner, Advocate Borotho Matsoso, expressed his profound gratitude. “This donation is a beacon of hope, not just for the LMPS but for the entire nation. As we strive to protect our people from cyber threats, this contribution empowers us to do more,” he said, calling on other companies to follow Alliance’s example in supporting law enforcement efforts.

Alliance Insurance further revealed plans to construct a new police station in Ha Palama, Leribe, and to provide much-needed visibility equipment for traffic controllers. They are also set to repair fire trucks across the country, ensuring they are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.This donation follows Alliance’s previous contributions, including the renovation of Mabote Police Station and the construction of the Mapoteng Police Station, showcasing their ongoing commitment to supporting the LMPS.
