Letšohla beats the odds 25 years on

Lebohang Letšohla, a name synonymous with the vibrant sounds of Sefako sa Menoaneng is a testament to the enduring power of passion and perseverance. Letšohla was born and raised in the breathtaking landscapes of the Thaba–Tseka district. He later moved to Leribe where he currently resides.
His journey from an aspiring musician to the celebrated artist he is spans a quarter of a century, a milestone he recently marked with a resounding celebration at Tšifa-li-Mali in early February.
In an exclusive interview with Public Eye, Letšohla openly talked about his inspiring journey, revealing his deep-seated love for music.
The journey wasn’t easy, he says. Letšohla’s musical odyssey began in 1996 collaborating with the esteemed famo icon Apollo Ntabanyane.
This formative period, lasting until 2000, nurtured his talent and ignited a burning passion that would define his future.
He recognized his potential and fueled by an unwavering belief in his craft, launched his own musical project and decided to embrace the stage as Sefako sa Menoaneng in February 2002.
The path of success, however, was far from smooth. The early years presented formidable challenges.
Letšohla recounts how he struggled with forgery, and a frustrating lack of support resulting in little to no financial return from his initial efforts.
These obstacles, rather than discouraging him, only strengthened his resolve. His dedication shone through, propelling him forward despite the adversity.
In 2010, he thought of taking a break, but the following year he released a hit album that reignited his belief that music was a calling to him.
Now two and half decades later, Sefako sa Menoaneng stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment.
The recent event at Tšifa-li-Mali was a powerful symbol of his achievement, drawing in media houses namely Television Lesotho, Radio Lesotho and Ultimate Radio, to mention few.
Fellow musicians, the likes of Rabotšo le Semanyane, gospel singers from Leribe and Botha-Bothe graced the event to celebrate the significant milestone.
Letšohla gathered his friends and followers at Tšifa-li-Mali to help him sort a date for a massive upcoming event to officially celebrate 25 years since he joined music. The date and month are yet to be confirmed with Letšohla saying they (his group) and friends failed to reach a consensus.
He, however, says the grand event will still be held in Leribe.
Over the years, Sefako sa Menoaneng has released an impressive 21 albums. He proudly holds seven awards including two international recognitions, solidifying his place in the global music scene.
Letšohla says he built a modest house for his family and ensured his children’s access to education by paying school fees from the proceeds of his career and adds “just like all men.”
In his interview, when asked about his creative process in music, Letšohla shared that most of his song writing is deeply rooted in his life experiences.
His songs, he says, often draw inspiration from the everyday life in Lesotho, capturing the joys, sorrows and struggles of his community.
He notes the personal observations, conversations overhead and even the changing seasons can ignite a spark, leading to the creation of new melody or lyric.
The music flows organically, a testament to his deep connection with his surroundings and the human experience. He usually finds himself writing during moments of sadness, channeling his emotions into melodies that resonate with his audience.
When asked about his advice for the next generation of Lesotho’s musical talent, Letšohla’ response was simple yet powerful. He spoke of the importance of humility, patience and respecting the journeys of others.
He cautioned against the pitfalls of arrogance, reminding young artists that success is “a marathon not a sprint, and collaboration is always key.”
The muso stressed that respecting fellow musicians regardless of their level of success is crucial.
As part of his ongoing initiative to expand his reach, Letšohla who boast a substantial 76 000 followers on Facebook is preparing for the release of his highly anticipated album, Samane #21. This new album will undoubtedly further connect him with the fans who supported him throughout his career.
The upcoming album, he says, promises to further solidify his “connection with fans” and is eagerly awaited by his large online community.
With his impressive music career on the side, Letšohla’s personal life is equally rich.
He is a proud father of four children, three boys and one girl, who share his love and passion for music, suggesting a continuation of his musical heritage for generations to come.
His last-born, a sonm opted into music industry ‘pushing’ hip-hop and taking the alias Letšohla Junior to his hordes of supporters.
Letšohla’s story is more than just a musical journey it’s a narrative of unwavering determination, resilience in the face of adversity, and the enduring power of passion.
