Rakaota triumphs at Shell V-Power Classic 2025
Overcomes tactical challenges and limited local opportunities to secure landmark victory
SEBONGILE MATHE
MASERU – 18-year-old Khotsofalang Rakaota etched his name into cycling history by winning the gruelling 104km Men’s Under-23 Shell V-Power Classic 2025 in Botswana – victory achieved with razor-sharp tactics and unwavering focus and marking a milestone for Lesotho’s rising cycling talent.
Rakaota credited this recent race to training, indicating that he trained for just one week before conquering the Shell V-Power Classic.
His race strategy hinged on maintaining a leading position alongside three other cyclists. However, in a dramatic twist, a rival group overtook them on the fourth lap, just 4km from the finish line.
Rather than panicking, Rakaota says he adapted swiftly, shifting his position to reclaim the lead and clinch the win.
Despite his success, Rakaota highlighted the hurdles faced by cyclists from smaller nations. He noted that the varied bicycle types used in international competitions often unsettle riders, causing them to lose focus even with a clear advantage.
His ambitions stretch beyond local races. He aims to compete in the African Championships and join an international cycling team. However, he emphasized that limited race opportunities in Lesotho stifle development.
“Many talented cyclists are lost due to lack of funding and exposure,” he said, stressing the need for sponsorship to nurture future stars.
Rakaota’s cycling journey began unexpectedly in 2016 when his brother-in-law introduced him to the sport at age 10. Despite no prior experience, he cultivated a deep passion for cycling. His dedication bore fruit earlier this year he won the Bocheletsane Cycling Classic, a precursor to his Shell V-Power triumph.
He attributes his success to hard work, discipline, and relentless commitment, urging young athletes to pursue their dreams with the same vigour.
Rakaota’s victory, paired with Pontšo Makatile’s win in the Women’s Junior category, symbolizes a bright future for Lesotho’s cycling scene. Their dual triumph has ignited national pride and inspired hope for the next generation of athletes.
As Rakaota sets his sights on international competitions, his story underscores the need for greater investment in grassroots sports.
With consistent training, more competitive opportunities, and sponsor support, he believes Lesotho can produce world-class cyclists.
For now, his victory at the Shell V-Power Classic stands as a testament to what talent and tenacity can achieve – even against the odds.
