Lioli FC 2024/25 VPL champions in dominant fashion

SEBONGILE MATHE
MASERU – Lioli FC has once again cemented its dominance in Lesotho football, securing back-to-back Vodacom Premier League (VPL) titles with a 3-1 victory over Limkokwing University FC on May 24 at DIFA-Maputsoe Stadium.
The win capped off a stellar season, with ‘Tse Nala’ finishing at the summit with 71 points – four clear of second-placed Matlama FC – and claiming their seventh league title overall.
The 2024/25 Campaign was fiercely competitive, with multiple clubs vying for the top spot.
However, Lioli’s consistency, tactical discipline, and mental fortitude set them apart. Despite a mid-season dip in form that briefly saw Matlama overtake them, Lioli regained momentum in the decisive final stretch, securing crucial wins when it mattered most.
A 2-0 victory over LMPS FC in the second to last match put Lioli on the brink of glory, needing just one point from their final two games to clinch the title. The 3-1 triumph over Limkokwing sealed the deal, ensuring they finished the season unbeaten in their last six matches.
Matlama (65 points), despite a late resurgence, fell short, while LDF FC surged to third (62 points) after a dominant 4-0 win over LMPS.
Head coach, Motheo Mohapi, played a pivotal role in Lioli’s success, instilling a no-complacency mindset even after the title was secured.
“Every match is a battle, not a friendly. Our goal was to surpass 70 points, and we did that through sheer hard work and focus,” Mohapi emphasized in post-match reflections.
His leadership ensured the team remained disciplined and motivated, turning potential setbacks into stepping stones toward victory.
While Lioli celebrated, the season ended in disappointment for ACE Maseru and Mzamane FC, who were relegated after struggling at the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, the league will welcome Maroala FC and Members FC, two debutants set to bring fresh energy to the 2025/26 season.
As champions, Lioli now turn their attention to the2025-26 CAF Champions League, where they will represent Lesotho on the continental stage. With a strong squad and winning mentality, they aim to make a deeper impact than in previous campaigns.
Lioli’s back-to-back triumph is more than just a title – it’s a testament to their legacy in Lesotho football. As the celebrations continue, the club now sets its sights on greater challenges ahead.
