Women’s cricket team targets World Cup spot

MASERU – Lesotho’s Senior Women’s National Cricket team is set to compete in the World Cup Qualifiers in Botswana, a significant step for the nation’s growing women’s cricket scene.
The team has been placed in Group A alongside Rwanda, Malawi, and Cameroon, with their opening match against Rwanda scheduled for July 20. A squad of 14 players will travel to Botswana.
Head coach, Dzikamai Alexander Mavhiko, described the months leading up to the qualifiers as a period of intense preparation. “The ladies have worked tirelessly on the physical, mental, and intellectual aspects of the game,” he explained.
Beyond the technical training, Mavhiko emphasised the importance of team building and fostering a winning mindset.
“We have focused on team unity, mental resilience, and instilling a winning mindset,” he added.
Mavhiko underscored the significance of representing Lesotho: “We are fully aware of what it means to wear the national colors. This badge on the chest is more than just a uniform, it is a symbol of pride, dedication, and the dreams of young girls across Lesotho who look up to these pioneers of women’s cricket.”
He stated that their mission is to compete with honour and national pride, aiming not just to participate but to compete fiercely while continuing to build a strong foundation for women’s cricket in Lesotho.
Captain, ‘Maneo Nyapela, expressed the team’s determination, promising to bring a win back home.
“We have seen the changes from our training and we are confident we will perform well in Botswana,” she said, acknowledging the challenges faced but highlighting the team’s fighting spirit and dedication for their nation.
Player Mosa Tšemane echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team’s readiness and commitment.
“We stand here with our heads held high, we will bring change.”
Vice President, Makhahlo Mohale, recognised the challenging journey the team has undertaken to reach this point. She expressed gratitude to the players for their active approach to training, highlighting their early commitment as key factor in their success.
“We are incredibly proud of their achievements,” she concluded.
Lesotho’s participation in the World Cup Qualifiers represents a significant milestone for women’s cricket in the country, showcasing the dedication and hard work of the players.
