Matsieng tournament sparks table-tennis revolution

MASERU – Matsieng recently hosted a vibrant celebration of the King’s birthday intertwined with a significant stride towards nurturing Lesotho’s next generation of table tennis stars.
Chabeli Mohatlane, Executive Board Member of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation (CTTF), spearheaded an inaugural tournament specifically for children from local clubs and schools.
Mohatlane announced plans to make this event an annual tradition, underscoring the CTTF’s commitment to community engagement and promoting table tennis as a powerful tool for positive youth development in Lesotho.
“We recognize the vital role sports play in building communities and shaping young lives,” Mohatlane stated.
“This tournament is just the beginning. We aim to use table tennis to steer children away from negative influences like drug abuse, promoting good health, strong character and success both on and off the table.”
Looking ahead, Mohatlane stressed meticulous planning for future events to ensure timely communication and widespread school participation. This groundwork is crucial for identifying and preparing talent for regional, continental, and global competitions, including the Commonwealth Games.
He further revealed Lesotho’s pivotal role in the CTTF’s broader vision: leading the establishment of table tennis programmes across schools in the AUSC Region 5.
“Our mission extends far beyond this tournament,” Mohatlane emphasized. “Lesotho is tasked with driving this development initiative throughout the region, impacting a vast community. Critically, this includes implementing programs to actively encourage participation from individuals with disabilities – a key focus area entrusted to me within the Federation.”
Adding to the nation’s momentum, Mohatlane shared significant news, Lesotho has been selected to host the prestigious 3rd Masters Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships and Youth Under-15 Boys and Girls competitions next September.
“This honour is tremendous motivation,” Mohatlane said. “We will work tirelessly to prepare for these events, further cementing Lesotho’s growing reputation in the sport.”
The Matsieng event, therefore, served not only as a royal celebration but as a concrete commitment to developing talent and harnessing table tennis as a transformative force for positive change within Lesotho’s youth.
