Young riders shine in BMX freestyle contest

MASERU – The Federation of Cycling Lesotho (FCL) celebrated Bicycle Day with unprecedented energy on August 10, drawing crowds to the Lepereng Olympia Africa Grounds for its first-ever MTB XCC and BMX Freestyle Festival.

Held under the “Bikes for Lesotho” initiative in partnership with Working Bikes, the event highlighted cycling’s surging popularity in Lesotho and showcased the program’s positive community impact. A vibrant atmosphere filled the grounds as athletes of all ages competed, with the debut of BMX Freestyle marking a historic milestone for the sport.

Coach Khoarai Khoarai praised the event’s organization but stressed urgent needs, saying “We introduced BMX Freestyle brilliantly, but we lack a dedicated skate park for training. Sponsorship is critical—many children lose hope when cycling isn’t supported like other sports. Incentives would keep them motivated.”
The BMX competitions delivered electrifying performances. Masupha Moshoeshoe (Under-14), Nthabiseng Suhlane (Women’s) and Ramoroke Serobanyane (Over-18) claimed top honours in their categories, demonstrating young talent’s potential.
The MTB XCC race also thrived, attracting veterans and newcomers alike. FCL PRO, Malefane Morie, noted: “Attendance broke records. While coaching newcomers posed minor challenges, we had zero injuries or bike damage — proof of our operational success.”

Notably, the entire FCL Executive Committee, alongside the LSRC President and LNOC Vice President, joined the XCC ride, signalling institutional commitment to cycling’s growth.

Morie concluded: “This festival proves cycling’s rising appeal in Lesotho. With sustained investment, our potential is limitless.”
