Lioli crowned kings of the Alliance Challenge

MASERU – Lioli FC have been crowned the champions of the 2025 Alliance Challenge, securing a hard-fought victory in a thrilling final against a determined LCS FC.

This year’s tournament, which made history by introducing a women’s division for the first time, served as a crucial pre-season test for Lesotho’s top football clubs.

The path to the final was a test of nerve, with both finalists securing their places via dramatic penalty shoot-out victories in the semi-finals. Lioli FC edged past Linare FC, while LCS FC overcame Matlama FC, setting the stage for a high-stakes final that highlighted the resilience and mental strength of both squads.
Lioli’s triumph stands as a testament to the immediate impact of newly appointed head coach, Bongani Maseko.

He emphasised the tournament’s vital role in preparing his squad for their upcoming CAF Champions League preliminary clash against South African giants Orlando Pirates FC, as well as the domestic league campaign.

“I am happy about the progress we are making,” stated a measured Maseko. “But there’s still much to improve. I am pleased with our winning mentality and the positive aspects of our play, but we can definitely do even better.”

His comments underscore a realistic approach, celebrating the team’s momentum while clearly acknowledging areas for development.
Despite the final defeat, Linare FC coach Leslie Notši remained optimistic about his team’s prospects. Highlighting their limited pre-season preparation, Notši emphasised the value of the lessons learned.

“We only had about four weeks of training, and we are satisfied with our progress,” he explained.

“This tournament was extremely helpful, and we have identified key areas to improve our competitiveness.” He also expressed satisfaction with the seamless integration of new signings, who successfully showcased their abilities in a competitive environment.
Individual accolades further underscored the tournament’s high level of competition. Lioli FC’s goalkeeper, William Huni, was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper, his heroics in the semi-final shootout proving decisive.

Linare FC’s striker, Mofihli Mabokoane, took home the Golden Boot, while the prestigious Player of the Tournament award was won by Lioli’s Tholang Makuru. Lioli’s well-deserved triumph was further rewarded with a substantial cash prize of M100 000.
The 2025 Alliance Challenge also celebrated a significant milestone with the introduction of its women’s division. Berea Ladies FC announced their dominance in spectacular fashion, overpowering Linare Ladies FC 6-0 to claim the inaugural championship.
The Alliance Challenge proved to be a resounding success, offering invaluable pre-season preparation for Lesotho’s clubs, showcasing growing talent, and marking a significant step forward for women’s football in the country.
