Notši banks on blend of youth and experience as Likuena target World Cup upsets

MASERU – In a move to build for the future while competing in the present, Likuena head coach Leslie Notši has named a provisional squad for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, merging seasoned campaigners with exciting new talent.

The 26-man selection features players from across the Lesotho football landscape, underscoring the depth available.

The goalkeeping duties will be contested by Sekhoane Moerane, Mosoeu Seahlolo, and Nthebe Majoro. A robust defensive unit includes Rethabile Mokokoane, Thabo Makhele and Mohlomi Makhetha, supported by Thato Sefoli and Thabang Malane.

The midfield engine room is packed with options like Kananelo Rapuleng, Tšepo Toloane, and the experienced Neo Mokhachane. The attacking impetus will fall to strikers Khaketla Matamane, Teboho Masuoane and Jane Thabantšo.

Coach Notši emphasised the dual objectives of immediate results and long-term development.

“My expectation is to see a very competitive team that works together,” he stated. “These matches are crucial for player development; it is where players find the experience they need to grow.”

He highlighted the importance of continuity, integrating players from previous youth setups.

“We need to ensure we are preparing other players for the future, as some may not be available for extended periods due to age.”

A notable omission from the squad is any player from Lioli FC. Notši clarified this was a deliberate and respectful decision, given the club’s parallel engagement in the CAF Champions League.

“We understand Lioli FC will be competing… during the same period as our qualifiers,” he explained. “Therefore, we have not included those players, respecting their commitment to Lesotho in that competition and giving the new Lioli coach the opportunity to get to know his players.”

Likuena face a monumental challenge in Group C, arguably the “group of death” for African minnows. They currently sit at the bottom of the table with just one point from their opening two matches, following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Nigeria and a narrow 1-0 loss to Benin.

With African powerhouses Nigeria and South Africa heavily favoured to secure the top two spots, Likuena’s realistic ambition is to fight for third place and use the campaign as a foundation for future tournaments.

Success will be measured by competitive performances and the growth of Notši’s young squad. The upcoming double-header – a home tie against South Africa and an away rematch with Benin – is critical. Securing points, particularly from the Benin fixture, is essential to keep their faint qualifying hopes alive and build momentum.

Likuena’s next home fixture against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana will be held at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on September 5, kicking off at 18:00. The team will then travel to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, for an away match against Benin on September 9, with a 19:00 kick-off.
