MASERU – The Sotho Kids Culture Agency received a hero’s welcome on Tuesday as government officials and tourism leaders applauded their successful tour of Europe, which has been hailed as a major boost for Lesotho’s global cultural profile.
The group, which recently returned from the prestigious Festival du Sud, was celebrated at an event hosted by the Ministry of Culture and the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC). They represented the African continent by showcasing vibrant Basotho heritage through traditional music, dance, and attire, while also promoting Lesotho’s unique tourist attractions.
Culture minister, Motlatsi Maqelepo, expressed immense pride in the group’s accomplishments.
“It was amazing to see you draw such huge crowds in Europe with performances that proudly showcased our rich culture,” he said.
“Through social media, we could follow and support you from afar and see the powerful impact you were making.”
Minister Maqelepo acknowledged that while the ministry could not provide financial backing for this tour, the government now fully recognizes the value of such initiatives. He stated that the success of the Sotho Kids has prompted a rethink of future support strategies for cultural projects.
The tour’s impact was quantified by LTDC’s Acting CEO, Mamello Morojele, who highlighted a massive surge in the group’s online following.
“Their Facebook followers grew exponentially from 43 000 to over 100 820, and their Instagram audience also saw significant growth,” Morojele stated.
“This digital footprint is invaluable; they are true cultural ambassadors who are directly enticing potential tourists to explore our ‘Kingdom in the Sky’.”
The group’s founder, Makhebe Seatlana, revealed the personal risk taken to make the tour happen, having funded the trip himself due to a lack of state support.
Despite the challenge, he expressed renewed optimism.
“This celebration gives us hope,” Seatlana remarked.
“The ministry’s acknowledgment signals a willingness to support future projects. We took a risk, and it has paid off, making us proud to have represented Lesotho at such a high level.”
In a symbolic gesture of appreciation, Minister Maqelepo and the LTDC presented the group with branded gifts. This modest ceremony was described as a meaningful step toward a stronger partnership between the government and the nation’s cultural practitioners.
The success of the Sotho Kids Culture Agency stands as a testament to how cultural exports can drive national branding and tourism growth, turning heritage into a powerful economic asset.
