Alliance Insurance cements legacy of social duty

• Corporate giant’s ‘plough back’ initiative builds foundations for safer communities

LERIBE – In a demonstration of corporate citizenship, the Alliance Insurance Group has once again answered the call of national duty, handing over a state-of-the-art police station to the underserved community of Ha Palama in the Leribe district.

The ceremony, held last Friday, marked more than just the opening of a new building. It symbolized the culmination of a shared vision for security, justice and community well-being, driven by one of the nation’s most steadfast corporate partners.
For years, the Ha Palama community endured the scourge of high crime rates, including murder, stock theft and child marriages, with desperately under-resourced officers from the distant Ha Lejone station struggling to respond timely.

Since 2020, a dedicated but overwhelmed team of one Police Sergeant and three officers operated from the Chief Theko Seetsa’s house, using it as both an office and a residence.
Senior Assistant Police Commissioner for Leribe, Kethang Tenane, highlighted the transformative impact even this limited presence had.

“These police used to receive about 15 to 20 cases per month but right now they receive about five cases per month. This shows that the crime level has decreased since their arrival,” he stated. However, he acknowledged the immense strain, noting that officers from Ha Lejone were “overwhelmed with so much work,” trying to cover vast areas with limited resources.

The new facility, therefore, represents a monumental leap forward. It boasts three office spaces, including one for the Officer Commanding, and two separate cells for male and female detainees, providing a secure, dignified, and functional environment for both officers and the community they serve.
The handover was framed not as a simple donation, but as the latest chapter in Alliance Insurance’s deeply ingrained philosophy of corporate social responsibility, known within the company as ‘plough back’ – a commitment to reinvesting profits directly into initiatives that tangibly benefit Basotho.

Mohapinyane Taole, Financial Director of Alliance Insurance, eloquently captured this sentiment.

“This ceremony does not mark merely the transfer of bricks and mortar but the realisation of a shared vision,” he said. “We entrust this facility to the Ministry of Police with confidence that it will be a centre of excellence… a strong foundation for the safety and security of Basotho. It has been conceived and built with a purpose to provide a conducive environment for administration, operations, training, and community engagement.”

Taole emphasised that the building is a tool for justice. “May this block be a hub for efficient operations, professional growth, caring for personnel, and meaningful partnerships with the communities that rely on police service,” he added.

This initiative at Ha Palama is not an isolated act of charity but part of a consistent, strategic pattern of support for Lesotho’s security infrastructure. While details of all past projects were not listed in the handover, ‘Maneo Lelimo, Alliance Insurance Claims Manager, explicitly confirmed that supporting the police force is a key priority for their ‘plough back’ programme.

“Amongst the projects that were before us, was this one of building the police block at Ha Palama and we found it to be the one that we could fund and we preceded with it,” Lelimo stated. This comment underscores a proactive approach to identifying critical needs within the LMPS and deploying corporate resources to meet them.

This long-standing partnership has fostered immense goodwill and operational synergy between the corporate entity and the national police force.

The presence of Police Commissioner, Borotho Matsoso, at the handover was a testament to this.

“We are truly thankful to Alliance Insurance for such a donation; this indeed shows the great working relationship we have with one another,” Commissioner Matsoso said. He then turned to the community, pointing out that “The community of Ha Palama, it is in your hands to grow this police post and to work harmoniously with the police officers in this area.”
