Suspected burglar dies in custody

THABA-TSEKA – Police are investigating the death of a suspected serial burglar who died in their holding cell after he allegedly reported to be unwell earlier. According to the Thaba-Tseka police commander, Superintendent Thabo Mohai they are awaiting post-mortem report to determine the cause of the suspect’s death.

Mohai said the 32-year-old man from Ha Ramalapi died last week Wednesday night after his cell-mates informed police on duty that he was not feeling well. He said upon inspection, there were no external or visible injuries on the body. He added that when police who were on night guard took over the shift, they were not informed about the unwell inmate. “We will open a case as soon as we have established that there was foul play in the suspect’s death,” Mohai said.

He said earlier that night, other in-mates told police that the deceased was troublesome and had attacked a fellow cell-mate, accusing him of being a snitch. The deceased and the man he accused of snitching on him were arrested for a series of house breakings and thefts that allegedly occurred around the Project Area. It is alleged the two men broke into a total of 10 homes and stole property worth over M18 000 including clothing, airtime, food and alcohol.
