MOHALE’S HOEK – Hundreds of villagers in Mesitsaneng are facing starvation following a poor rain season.

Villagers told Public Eye they need food aid to survive until next harvest, adding potable water for domestic use was also scarce owing to a receding water table.

The village has two taps and a borehole. “There is no food and water, so we take our animals to South Africa where we pay Boers to graze our livestock,” said Justice Fosa.

The villagers pay M50 per head per month to fatten their animals in south Africa.

Chief Malemanye Mosiuoa said generally, the crop condition was poor in the district due to moisture deficit, adding vegetable production is very poor compared to the past.

Mosiuoa appealed to government to provide farming inputs next season if villagers are to shake off perennial food shortages.
