MASERU – Maseru taxi owners have accused government of reneging on an agreement to cushion them from rising operating costs.

According to Maseru Region Transport Operators (MRTO) spokesperson Lebohang Moea (MRTO) government had agreed to subsidise the operators in a bid to keep fares down.

He said to the operators’ disappointment, the government has been cold shouldering them since the turn of the year.

In an interview Moea said operators are considering increasing fares to match inflation and the rising cost of living.

The operators have gone to court and await the court’s decision on the matter.

Moea added illegal pirate taxis had clogged the industry, saying the police were not doing anything about the menace.
