MISA-Lesotho elects new Council

MASERU – The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA – Lesotho) on Sunday May 31, elected a new National Governing Council (NGC), the highest decision-making part of the organisation between annual general meetings, which will serve MISA – Lesotho for the next three years. Nkoale Oetsi Tšoana, who was the deputy chairperson since 2017 was elected new chairperson for the media advocacy organisation at an annual general meeting that was held in Quthing. Tšoana will be assisted by Kananelo Boloetse who was elected deputy chairperson.

Pulane Ntjantja was elected treasurer uncontested while Palesa Maharasoa and ’Masootho Lephoto were elected secretary general and deputy secretary general respectively. Thapelo Mabote and Lekhanya Mpesi were elected committee members. MISA is an umbrella organisation representing MISA national chapters in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. It defends and promotes media freedom, freedom of expression and access to information.

The founding of MISA was triggered by the Windhoek Declaration on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media in Africa of 1991. MISA-Lesotho aims to play a leading role in creating an environment of media freedom and freedom of expression that promotes independence, pluralism, diversity of views and opinions, media sustainability, competency and professionalism through research, advocacy, collaboration and capacity building.
