Maseru – Small business minister Chief Thesele Maseribane yesterday told the media that the government had approved his ministry’s recommendation to ban the importation of bottled water into the country.
The move, which Maseribane said was meant to promote small local players in the still water enterprises, also comes along with a temporary ban on the importation of vegetables such as green beans as a way of growing local capacity among upcoming farmers.
Lesotho is a major source of clean water known as “white gold” especially to neighbouring South Africa which badly needs water imports to fuel its giant industrial hub of Gauteng.
For this reason, many watchers have always questioned the paradox where most commercial bottled water found in supermarkets and in the hospitality industry is labelled as having been bottled from SA, yet Lesotho is the source of clean water.
