Tertiary students want allowances increased

Maseru – The United Students’ Representative Council wrote and submitted a letter to the Minister of Development and Planning on Tuesday June 1st,2021 requesting an increase in tertiary students’ monthly stipends.

In a letter, Reatile Makateng, Student Representative Secretariat (SRC) president of the National University of Lesotho (NUL) on behalf of all Lesotho tertiary institutions said the allowance they receive falls short of their monthly needs due to inflation both before and after the outbreak of Covid-19.

They added the ministry should ensure that the National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS) sponsors students studying at Institute of Extra-Mural Studies (IEMS) and Institute of Development Management (IDM) at diploma level like it does with other institutions that offer the same qualification.

Speaking to this publication today, Makateng said a presentation was made before the minister and his panel on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2021.

“We had a formal meeting the following day with the Minister to lay out our grievances, unfortunately no promises were made, at least nothing in our favour. So we are going to meet again with institutions’ representatives to establish a way forward,” he said.
