Music has always been in MATE.D’s blood

MASERU – “My lecturers and a lot of other people told me I was musically gifted and I decided to drop out of school to pursue my music career.”

Matete Leuta, 24, who is known widely as MAT E.D, is from Maseru East, and he left his IT studies at college and went on to study sound engineering – where his love for music grew. Matete had all his education in South Africa from primary school to high school and college. He then studied IT but things did not work out for him because many people around him told him he is musically gifted.

He then decided to enroll with Boston college to study sound engineering. “My music started developing when I was doing sound engineering and currently most of the times I perform Hip Hop, although I can also do other genres.

“I started with freestyles around 2010 with my friends, and around 2012 I recorded my first track and that is when I started taking my career seriously,” he told Life&Style.

“The music talent is in my family bloodline because my dad and my brother used to perform music before I later on also started doing music since I already had an idea about it. For now, I have two projects, a mixtape titled ‘Kulture’ and an EP which features South African upcoming artistes. On my mixtape I have a track titled ‘Basotho’ in which I feature a couple of local artists,” Matete continued.

He added of all his songs ‘Basotho’ is his favourite because it did well in the market and people loved it. He is currently working on another project ‘Thebe ea Khale’, which will be released anytime soon, further calling on his fans to expect more fresh content from him. Matete has featured Skebz-D, T-mech, Rifle 3 Shots and Sebata and Kopper Waleh. He said he would one day love to work with Kommanda Obbs, J-COB, Malome Vector and many other big names.

He looks up to Jay-Z and Birdman from the USA. “Lesotho’s entertainment industry is really growing and I love that royalties are now open and I see artistes dropping more quality content. Some are making waves in SA and overseas…the likes of Morena Leraba and Malome Vector.

“The future in music looks interesting and, to be honest, I am also slowly growing. I believe one day I will reach where I want to be and some of the things I have achieved so far make me believe I will make it…if they can I can.”
