MASERU – The 2019 Nedbank Mohokare Golf Classic Tournament champions, Motlalentoa Moloi and ’Malehloa Lekhooa, are back to defend their titles when the tournament returns to action this year. The 2020 and 2021 tournaments were cancelled due to prevalent Covid-19 pandemic restrictions that banned most sporting activities. Lekhooa is the defending champion in the female category while Moloi defends the males’ mantle –both their participation has already been confirmed. In an interview with Public Eye this week, the two-time women’s defending champion, Lekhooa said she is ready to take the course.

Lekhooa, who has been a feature in the tournament since 2015 and made her debut win in 2017, said she feels ready and set to compete having boosted her confidence with a win in the Letšeng Charity Golf Tournament last weekend. Lekhooa said, “Aas much as golf requires a lot of practice and engagement, I do not play regularly due to my 8:00am to 5:00pm job; but when I enter the turf I put the best of my concentration to work and remain disciplined to keep intact for the rest of the game. “Golf is a sport that does not attract a lot of noise and is respectable because of the conduct of the players, but if one misses the discipline and the concentration then it is impossible for such an individual to keep up in the sport.”

For his part, Moloi, who has been a part of the tournament from 2004 only to win it 2019, said he hopes his finger injury would not stand in the way of his wish to defend his title. “I am ready to take part in the action even though I sustained a finger injury while on personal errands, which makes me feel uneasy, I hope for the best. “Apart from the fact that the golf course is damp and filled with water from the current heavy rainfalls that have flooded it, it is going to need a player that uses his brains to work around playing the course. I also need to be mindful of my inconsistency in practice so I will have to come out with everything I have,” Moloi said.

The 2022 Nedbank Mohokare Golf Classic tournament has attracted 132 participants from the SADC region in countries like Botswana, eSwatini, Mozambique and South Africa.
