IEC’s party list continues to soar

MASERU – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has awarded registration certificates to four more political parties – bringing to 57 the total of registered parties ahead of this year’s polls in September.

The four political parties are the Basotho Council for Economic Freedom – led by Majakathata
Thakhisi; the Revolutionary Alliance of Democracy with Relebohile Lephotho at the head; Your Opportunity and Network Alliance under the leadership of Kabelo Jonkomane as well as the Empowerment Movement for Basotho led by Katiso Phasumane.

Speaking at the official announcement of the registration in Maseru on Friday IEC Mphasa Mokhochane highlighted the Commission’s recognition of young leadership in these parties and congratulated them.

He also appealed to the party leaders to be fully involved in civic and voter education of their supporters so that the problem of voter turnout can be history.

For his part, the Director of Elections, Mpaiphele Maqutu, encouraged the parties to participate in all electoral activities, but mainly during national and local government elections.
