MASERU – Disbanded Maseru football club, Kick4Life FC, is expected to soon announce the buyer of its Vodacom Premier League status. The Police Europa-based-side’s management officially announced last month that they were selling their men’s team premiership status, citing burdensome expenses in running the Kick4Life Academy’s men’s side in Lesotho as the key reason for folding the team.

Kick4Life ex-officio executive member, Makoanyane Letsie, told local reporters last month that some of the clubs had already showed interest in buying the status. According to Kick4Life media officer, Reitumetse Tlopo, negotiations between the club and potential buyers are continuing, and they will soon be announcing the buyers.

“Negotiations are continuing between the club and the potential buyers, and when things are finalized we will make an announcement,” said Tlopo in an interview with Public Eye on Monday this week. Tlopo added: “Yes, some of the clubs showed interest and negotiations are continuing and, believe me, we will soon be announcing the buyers.”

FC Likhopo was one of the clubs said to be interested in buying the Kick4Life status after they were relegated from the Premier League to the A-Division in the just-ended season of the 2020/21. This was revealed to Public Eye by a close source within FC Likhopo management immediately after Kick4Life announced the sale of the status last month.

But FC Likhopo’s First Vice President, Qamako Mahao, would not be drawn into confirming or denying his club’s interest in buying the Kick4Life status. Instead, he said they were still in the process of compiling their annual reports and that they hadn’t yet taken any decision regarding the club’s future.

“We are still in the process of compiling our reports to forge our way forward,” said Mahao in an interview on Tuesday this week. “We haven’t yet taken a decision of how to move forward.” Kick4Life will be focusing on their women’s team, Kick4Life Ladies, which is campaigning in the Lesotho Women Super League, the academy’s boys team is playing in the B-Division.

Kick4Life was founded by as a charity organisation in 2005 by brothers Steve Fleming and Pete Fleming from the United Kingdom, with the men’s team founded in 2008 and women’s team in 2009. The men’s team were promoted to the Lesotho Premier League in the 2013/14 season after they were crowned the A Division north stream champions and, since then, Kick4Life FC has maintained its status in the Lesotho’s football top-flight league.

Kick4Life FC finished the 2020/21 season lying on ninth position on the 16-team Vodacom Premier League log table. On the other hand, Kick4Life Ladies became the founding members of the Lesotho Women Super League in 2015 and won the Super League Cup in 2018, before they became the national Women Super League champions in 2021.
