MASERU – In a bold move to celebrate Lesotho’s musical talents, the government has launched the National Music Awards, a significant step towards recognising and nurturing the country’s artistes. Despite operating under tight budgetary constraints, the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Motlatsi Maqelepo, said this initiative aims to uplift Lesotho’s musicians and their contributions to the industry.
Speaking at the inaugural National Music Awards held last Friday, Maqelepo expressed his enthusiasm for the project, which is poised to become an annual event. Organised by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with Melodious Music Awards and the Lesotho Copyright Society of Authors and Artists (LESCOSAA), the event showcased a diverse array of musical talent and celebrated individuals who have made their mark in the industry.
The awards featured over 25 categories, including Best Radio Presenter, Best Producer, Best Male Artist, Best Famo Artist, Best Afro-Soul Artist, and Best Hip-Hop Artist. The prestigious Queen ’Mamohato Lifetime Achievement Award was among the highlights, acknowledging those who have made outstanding contributions to the nation’s musical heritage.
Maqelepo conceded he had not anticipated such a successful launch, saying: “I did not think these awards would take off on such a high note, but the response has been remarkable. The energy and enthusiasm we have seen are a clear sign that Basotho artistes are brimming with potential. What we witnessed tonight is just the beginning of something truly special.”
He went on to highlight the importance of supporting Lesotho’s creative industry.
“Our role as a government is to create an environment that allows our artistes to thrive. Basotho children are immensely talented, and events like these give them the platform they need to shine. As Lesotho celebrates 200 years, we are reintroducing, rebranding, and reconnecting with our cultural identity, and music is a key part of that journey,” he said.
The minister added that future editions of the National Music Awards will be even grander, with plans to expand partnerships with other ministries and the private sector. “Next year, this event will be four times better. The creative industry is one of the highest earning sectors globally, and we must ensure that our artists have the opportunities they deserve,” he concluded.
Melodious Music Awards organiser, Rorisang Motsamai, echoed the minister’s sentiments, saying the event marked a turning point for Lesotho’s music industry. “History has been made tonight. With the support of our sponsors, we have brought to life an event that many only dreamed of seeing on television. This is a moment for all Basotho to be proud of.”
Motsamai proudly announced that 28 artistes were honoured for their exceptional contributions. The recognition has sparked hope that more artistes will gain the visibility and the opportunities they need to thrive in the competitive industry.
Among the night’s biggest winners was Tumelo Seliane, popularly known as T-Born, who took home the award for Best Hip-Hop Artist. Speaking with Public Eye, T-Born shared his excitement and gratitude for the recognition.
“I know many were surprised to see a gospel hip-hop artiste win in this category, but I have always believed in God’s grace. This award is proof that anything is possible when you have faith. I am excited for what lies ahead, and I know this is just the beginning of many more opportunities to come,” he said.
T-Born added that the award will open doors not only for him but also for other aspiring artistes. “Every door that opens for me, I will ensure it also opens for other artistes. We are in this together, and it is time for Lesotho’s music to reach the world,” he added.
Other notable winners included Minister Spokes, who won Most Played Song on Radio, and Malome Vector, who received a Tribute Award. The legendary Puseletso Seema was honoured with the Queen ’Mamohato Lifetime Achievement Award for her incredible 60-year career, during which she has released a prolific 60 albums.
