MASERU – Vodacom Lesotho has announced a substantial investment of M500 million over three years to enhance its network and IT infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to technological progress and socio-economic development in the country.
With M155.6 million already spent in the 2023/24 financial year and M171.9 million allocated for 2024/25, the company is set to invest an additional M169.5 million in 2025/26, completing the ambitious project.
Vodacom Lesotho Chief Technology Officer, Molupe Mothepu, stated that the initiative is designed to expand the company’s network reach and improve service quality across the country, ensuring a widespread and positive impact.
A key component of this investment is the construction of new cell sites in underserved areas, addressing challenges faced by diverse communities. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural populations, providing essential communication services, educational resources, and economic opportunities to previously neglected regions.
“The impact is transformative, fostering inclusion and unlocking economic potential,” Mothepu said.
As part of the project, Vodacom Lesotho has modernized nine sites with advanced technology to ensure reliable service, meeting the growing demand for data services. Critical power upgrades and strategic optimizations have also been implemented to enhance network performance.
Additionally, the integration of extra spectrum into the LTE network has expanded Vodacom’s coverage, improving data speeds and reliability. The reactivation of eight sites has further strengthened the company’s 5G offerings, positioning Vodacom as a leader in high-speed connectivity.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, Vodacom Lesotho is also prioritizing robust cybersecurity measures and forming strategic partnerships to accelerate the rollout of fiber optic networks.
Tšepo Ntaopane, Vodacom Lesotho’s Executive Head of External Affairs and Regulatory, emphasized the broader significance of the initiative. “Connectivity can significantly improve lives, bridge the digital divide, and foster inclusive growth,” he said.
This initiative aligns with Vodacom’s broader strategy to drive technological advancement and economic empowerment in Lesotho, ensuring more communities have access to reliable and high-speed internet services.
