RSL and LIA in tax literacy drive

MASERU – In a bid to boost tax compliance and financial literacy among Basotho, Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL), in collaboration with the Lesotho Institute of Accountants (LIA), has been conducting a series of nationwide tax literacy workshops throughout the country.
The workshops, which form part of RSL’s annual Filing Season Campaign, began on April 28 and conclude today, May 8, in Maseru.
They have reached all 10 districts of Lesotho, targeting key sectors of the economy including hospitality, construction, commercial farming, retail and wholesale, real estate, professional services, and other service providers such as security, catering, and car rental businesses.
Speaking on the initiative, RSL officials said the workshops are geared towards simplifying the annual tax filing process and increasing voluntary compliance among taxpayers. Lesotho’s tax filing season runs from April 1 to June 30 every year and requires individuals, small businesses, and corporations to submit income tax returns and settle any dues within this period.
In the press release, RSL revealed that the workshops are not just about filing returns. It is also about educating taxpayers on accurate form completion and introducing digital tools that make compliance more accessible.
“The goal is to foster a well-informed, tax-compliant nation,” it highlighted.
In addition to step-by-step guidance on income tax return filing, the sessions spotlight RSL’s expanding digital offerings, including online tax registration, e-filing, e-payment platforms, and the issuance of Tax Clearance and VAT 11 certificates.
The Lesotho Institute of Accountants has also played a key role in the sessions by offering basic training in financial record-keeping, aimed particularly at small and medium enterprises. The training equips participants with essential bookkeeping skills to support accurate tax reporting and long-term business sustainability.
This joint initiative underscores RSL’s commitment to promoting a culture of voluntary compliance through public engagement and digital transformation. By demystifying tax obligations and equipping citizens with the right tools and knowledge, the campaign aims to reduce errors, encourage early filing, and improve revenue collection for national development.
