Mahao’s bodyguard kills attackers

MASERU – A man who identified himself as a bodyguard of the Vice Chancellor of the National University of Lesotho (NUL) Professor Nqosa Mahao, surrendered himself to the police after he allegedly killed two of the three men who tried to kidnap him.

The fatal shooting allegedly occurred on Sunday morning near Salang in Khubetsoana.

According to police spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli, the 38-year-old man was sleeping in his car, waiting for his friend who had gone into a shop when the three men pounced on him.

Mopeli said the three accused the man of stealing a car battery that belonged to one of them.

He said the man pulled a gun a fired at his attackers, killing two of them – a 28-year-old man of Ha Mabote and his 31-year-old companion from Maqalika.

He said the third man escaped and later reported the incident to the police.

The suspect later surrendered himself and his firearm, a .38 revolver along with seven rounds of ammunition to the police.
