Wool, mohair testing bureau on the cards

Maseru – The Lesotho Wool Centre is preparing to construct a Testing Bureau for wool and mohair in Maseru, the Centre’s Managing Director Mr Stone Shi has said.

Shi said the centre has earmarked M20 million for the construction, adding that the facility will be independently administered by a board composed of farmers.

He noted the testing bureau is expected to be operational by September, pointing out that the construction will be co-supported by the Lesotho Wool Centre and Lesotho government.

Shi further explained that three experts from Australia will come to Lesotho for a year to train Basotho on wool and mohair testing techniques.

Lesotho Wool Centre Warehouse Manager, Mr Mabilikoe Mosenye said the Centre has made an investment pledge to help Lesotho government realise its intention to have a full-fledged testing laboratory with full international compliance.

When the laboratory is up and running, he said, it will help in reducing costs for the testing of wool and mohair for farmers.

Mosenye revealed samples of wool and mohair are currently being send for testing in New Zealand since the South Africa-based international bureau in Port Elizabeth refused to work with the centre during the last season. – Lena
