MASERU — In a nation still striving to carve out its place in the world of high fashion, a quiet revolution is unfolding. Lesotho may not yet be counted among the established capitals of glamour, but it is producing extraordinary talent and visionary leaders capable of competing on the international stage.
The latest showcase from Lady M Collection, which debuted on Tuesday, proved that with creativity, collaboration, and conviction, vision can indeed be transformed into visibility.
The runway event, held in Maseru, was graced by Queen ’Masenate Seeiso, Princess Senate, Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara, and a host of public figures and dignitaries.
The collection, designed by Lesotho’s own celebrated fashion architect Georges Malelu, was a masterclass in artistry and cultural sophistication.
Each piece reflected a seamless blend of African elegance and contemporary runway appeal, signaling that Lesotho’s fashion identity is ready for the global stage.
At the heart of this movement is ’Mamotake Matekane, the founder of Lady M Collection and a force of nature in business and philanthropy.
With over 15 years of experience spanning multiple sectors, Matekane is no stranger to leadership.
She currently serves as director of six companies and holds several board appointments across Lesotho and the African continent. Yet her latest endeavor is deeply personal – a fashion initiative designed not only to showcase exceptional design but also to empower emerging talent from Lesotho.
Lady M Collection was founded as a platform to elevate local designers and artisans, positioning their work within the competitive global fashion industry. The initiative emphasizes original, custom-made designs, ensuring that no piece is repeated – a hallmark of exclusivity and craftsmanship. Clients can also purchase pieces through the brand’s website, extending its reach beyond Lesotho’s borders.
Speaking at the launch, Matekane reflected on her journey and the intentionality behind her work.
“To everyone, especially young people or those who have miles to go, I want to say you have to do something about your life – the direction you want to take,” she said. “You have to take charge of what your name represents.”
She acknowledged that her path could have been markedly different. “I try not to be in the shadows because I could have easily been in my father’s shadows,” she shared. “But I prayed to God that I want to be a brand of my own.”
Matekane attributed much of her drive and success to a pivotal moment of mentorship.
“The honor that I get globally is because of the effort that I put in and impacting lives. It takes one person to change your life. It took one person to change the direction of my life, and that was the prime minister, Ntsokoane Matekane,” she said, expressing gratitude as well to her church and the dedicated team behind the event.
Beyond the elegance on display, the launch carried a broader message of self-determination. Matekane emphasized that Lady M Collection is not merely a fashion brand but a vehicle for purpose and impact.
She hinted at ambitious plans ahead, revealing that the collection will soon make its international debut with a showcase in Atlanta, Georgia, during the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament – a move that positions Lesotho’s creative sector on one of the world’s biggest stages.
The collection itself, crafted by Georges Malelu, stood as a testament to the depth of homegrown talent. Malelu, widely regarded as one of Lesotho’s dominant fashion designers, brought to life designs that balanced bold structure with fluid elegance, drawing from African heritage while embracing modern silhouettes. The collaboration between Matekane and Malelu underscores the foundation’s mission: to create visibility for exceptional local talent while building a brand that competes with international luxury houses.
As Lady M Collection sets its sights on global expansion, Matekane’s message remains grounded in empowerment. Her journey – from award-winning international professional to entrepreneur, philanthropist, and now fashion industry leader – reflects a commitment to using influence to uplift others. With a clear vision, strategic partnerships, and an unapologetic embrace of her own identity, she is redefining what it means to be a creative force in Lesotho.
For a country still finding its footing in the fashion world, the rise of Lady M Collection offers more than just beautiful clothing. It offers a blueprint: that with purpose, collaboration, and courage, even the smallest creative communities can command the global runway.
